Causes of Car Seat Belt Retraction Failure

The failure of a car seat belt to retract is usually due to the accumulation of grease and aging issues from long-term use. When the seat belt's surface gets covered with sweat and grease, it can become stiff and get stuck on the hook above the seat. Another situation is internal aging of the seat belt, which slows down the retraction speed or leaves a portion of the belt outside. Solutions for these issues include cleaning the seat belt with a damp cloth, lubricating the bearings, and cleaning and servicing the retraction reel.

From a functional perspective, in the event of an accident, the seat belt collects information through a probe, releases an electric pulse to ignite the gas generator, which produces gas to push the ball chain forward, ultimately driving the ratchet wheel to lock the seat belt. This entire process only lasts a few seconds. Therefore, if the seat belt fails to retract, it might be due to a malfunction in the retraction reel, requiring professional maintenance.

For car owners, if the seat belt does not retract, there is no need to worry excessively. First, try cleaning it with a damp cloth or lubricating the bearings. If these methods do not work, seek professional help immediately to ensure the seat belt functions properly. Avoid using the vehicle and refrain from long-distance travel, as a damaged seat belt cannot effectively protect passengers, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a traffic accident.
